UK Powerball — Results, Prizes & How to Play

UK Powerball is the world's most famous jackpot game, now officially available to British players through The National Lottery. With jackpots starting at £12 million, no cap on rollovers, and three draws every week, Powerball brings a scale of prize that no other UK lottery can match. Tickets went on sale on 21 July 2026, and all prizes are paid tax-free to UK winners.

Brief History of Powerball

Powerball was born in the United States in April 1992 as the first lottery game in the world to use two separate drums — one for the main numbers, one for the Powerball. That dual-drum format is what allows jackpots to roll to extraordinary heights.

In October 2015, the current number matrix was introduced: the main pool expanded from 1–59 to 1–69, while the Powerball pool shrank from 1–35 to 1–26. The change made jackpots harder to win, triggering longer rollover streaks. Within three months, the game produced a then-record $1.586 billion jackpot in January 2016.

In August 2021, Monday draws were added, bringing the frequency to three draws per week. The jackpot could now grow even faster — culminating in the $2.04 billion world-record jackpot won in California in November 2022, the largest lottery prize ever awarded anywhere on earth.

In July 2026, Allwyn introduced Powerball as a new National Lottery game in the United Kingdom, connecting British players to the same shared prize pool as 48 US lotteries for the very first time.

How to Play

Powerball uses a dual-drum format. Your entry is made up of numbers from two completely separate pools:

  • 5 main numbers — chosen from 1 to 69
  • 1 Powerball — chosen separately from 1 to 26 (it can repeat one of your main numbers)

You can pick your own numbers or use a Lucky Dip to have them generated randomly. Each line costs £4. You must be 18 or over to play, and tickets can be bought online via The National Lottery or at authorised retail outlets.

To win the jackpot, you must match all five main numbers and the Powerball.

UK-exclusive prize tier

UK players benefit from a prize tier that does not exist in the American version of the game: match just 2 main numbers (no Powerball required) and you win a fixed £8. This tier nearly doubles your overall chances of winning something compared to US players — roughly 1 in 13 for UK players versus 1 in 25 in the US.

The Rollover System

When no ticket matches all six winning numbers, the jackpot rolls over to the next draw. There is no cap on how many times it can roll, and no upper limit on how large it can grow. The minimum starting jackpot is approximately £12 million.

Because the jackpot is shared with the same pool used by 48 US lotteries — with three draws per week — rollovers can escalate very quickly, which is how Powerball has produced record-breaking prizes stretching into the billions.

A few important points specific to the UK version:

  • The jackpot is paid over 30 years. UK winners do not receive a lump sum. The advertised jackpot figure represents the estimated total paid out in annual instalments over 30 years.
  • All UK prizes are tax-free as awarded (though future investment returns or gifts from winnings may create separate tax considerations).
  • The jackpot can be shared. If more than one ticket matches all six numbers in the same draw, the prize is divided equally among the winners.
  • Why is the UK jackpot lower than the US figure? The two figures describe the same shared prize pool. The difference comes from the dollar-to-pound conversion and the fact that the UK figure is already quoted after-tax, while the US figure is quoted before substantial federal and state tax deductions.

Prize Tiers & Odds

There are 10 prize tiers in UK Powerball. The jackpot and the Match 2 and Match 5 prizes are fixed; all other tiers are estimated amounts that vary per draw depending on ticket sales and the number of winners.

Draw Schedule

The Powerball draw takes place in Florida, USA. Because of the time difference with the UK, sales close on the evening before, and results are available in the early hours of the following morning.
