The UK Lotto: Britain's Flagship Lottery

Since its launch in the mid-1990s, the UK Lotto has been an iconic cultural institution and the flagship game of the National Lottery. In June 2026, the game entered its most exciting era yet. Under new operator Allwyn, the Lotto transitioned to a two-round format. This means that for the same £2 entry price, a single ticket now plays twice in every draw event, dramatically boosting the odds of creating millionaires across the nation.

A Brief History of the Game

The UK National Lottery held its very first draw on November 19, 1994, utilizing a classic 6/49 matrix. In 2002, the game was rebranded to "Lotto". Over the years, the structure was tweaked to keep the game fresh, most notably in October 2015 when the ball pool expanded from 49 to 59.

On June 10, 2026, Allwyn launched the "Two-Round Lotto". Keeping the ticket cost at £2 and the ball pool at 59, this update revolutionized the game by giving players two independent chances to win on a single slip. The update is projected to more than double the number of UK Lotto millionaires created each year.

Principles of the Game

1. Number of Numbers to Pick

To play, players select six main numbers from 1 to 59 (or opt for a randomly generated "Lucky Dip"). Each line costs £2.

2. The Two-Round Draw & The Bonus Ball

Instead of a single draw, each Wednesday and Saturday night now features two completely separate draw rounds using two different physical machines.

  • Round 1: The first machine draws 6 main numbers and 1 Bonus Ball.
  • Round 2: Immediately following, a second machine draws another, completely independent set of 6 main numbers and 1 Bonus Ball.

Your single set of 6 chosen numbers is evaluated separately against both Round 1 and Round 2. This means a player can win in Round 1, Round 2, or both rounds simultaneously with the exact same ticket.

The Bonus Ball in each round is drawn from the remaining 53 balls and applies strictly to players who have already matched 5 main numbers in that specific round, elevating their prize to a fixed £1 million.

3. Rollover System ("Must Be Won" Draws)

The multi-million-pound jackpot starts at £2 million.

  • The Shared Jackpot: Unlike lower tiers, the jackpot pool is shared across both Round 1 and Round 2. If a ticket matches all 6 numbers in either round, it claims the jackpot (or a share of it if multiple tickets win across the draws).
  • The Rollover Limit: If the jackpot is not won, it rolls over. It can roll over for a maximum of 5 consecutive draws.
  • Must Be Won: On the sixth consecutive draw, a "Must Be Won" draw is triggered. If no one matches all 6 numbers in either round, a Jackpot Rolldown occurs. The entire jackpot is distributed downward, boosting the cash prizes for every single player who matched 2 or more main numbers in that draw.

Prize Tiers and Odds of Winning

With two rounds played per ticket, the odds of matching numbers have effectively halved (doubling your probability of winning). The overall odds of winning any prize on a single £2 ticket are now a highly favorable 1 in 4.9.

Match 3 (Main Numbers Only)£10£101 in 48.4

Note on Lower Tiers: In the previous format, Match 2 awarded a "Free Lucky Dip" ticket. In the two-round format, matching 2 numbers in either round awards a fixed £1 cash prize per round. If you match 2 numbers in both Round 1 and Round 2, you win £2 (instantly covering the cost of your ticket).

Schedule for the Draw

Lotto draws continue to take place twice a week:

  • Wednesday Draws: The two-round draws are conducted live starting at approximately 8:00 PM GMT/BST.
  • Saturday Draws: The two-round draws are conducted live starting at approximately 7:45 PM GMT/BST.

For both draw nights, ticket sales close strictly at 7:30 PM and reopen for the next draw at 9:00 PM. Draws are broadcast live on the National Lottery’s digital channels and official YouTube channel, with results updated instantly across major media outlets.

UK Lotto is regulated by the Gambling Commission and operated by Allwyn Entertainment. All prizes are paid as tax-free lump sums. Players must be 18 or over. Please play responsibly — the National Lottery funds over 685,000 community projects, arts, sports, and heritage initiatives across the UK.
