EuroMillions: The Giant of European Lotteries
EuroMillions is one of the most iconic lottery games in the world, and for UK players it represents a chance to win life-changing, tax-free jackpots twice every week. With a starting jackpot of €17 million and a prize pool that can grow all the way to €250 million, it is no surprise that EuroMillions remains the most played lottery in the United Kingdom. Whether you are a first-time player or a seasoned enthusiast, this guide covers everything you need to know to play EuroMillions in the UK.
A Brief History of EuroMillions
EuroMillions was launched on 13 February 2004, initially offered to players in the UK, France, and Spain. The very first draw was held that same evening, with a French ticket holder taking home the opening jackpot of €15 million. Within the year, six more countries joined the game — Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Switzerland — creating the pan-European lottery pool that defines the game today.
Over the decades, the game has gone through several key evolutions. A second weekly draw was added in May 2011, making Tuesday and Friday the two regular draw nights. The Lucky Stars ball pool was expanded, the starting jackpot was increased, and prize tiers were refined to give players more ways to win. For UK players specifically, the Millionaire Maker raffle was introduced in November 2009, guaranteeing a £1 million prize to at least one UK player in every single draw — regardless of whether anyone wins the main jackpot.
The jackpot has produced some spectacular wins for UK players over the years, including a record-breaking £195 million jackpot claimed by an anonymous UK player in July 2019 — the largest lottery prize ever won in the United Kingdom.
How to Play EuroMillions
Picking Your Numbers
Playing EuroMillions is straightforward. For each line, you must select:
- 5 main numbers from a pool of 1 to 50
- 2 Lucky Stars from a separate pool of 1 to 12
To win the jackpot, all five main numbers and both Lucky Stars on your ticket must match the numbers drawn. There are 13 prize tiers in total, so you can still win a prize by matching just two main numbers.
Ticket Price
A standard EuroMillions ticket in the UK costs £2.50 per line. Every ticket automatically includes a UK Millionaire Maker code at no extra cost (see UK Specificities below).
The Rollover System and Jackpot Cap
If no player matches all seven numbers in a given draw, the entire jackpot rolls over and is added to the prize pool of the next draw. This rollover mechanism is what allows the jackpot to grow to extraordinary amounts over a run of consecutive draws.
To keep the game fair and exciting, EuroMillions operates a jackpot cap of €250 million. Once the jackpot reaches this maximum, it is held at that level. If it is not won in the following draw, the jackpot rolls down and is shared among winners in the next highest prize tier where there are winning tickets. The jackpot then resets to its starting value of €17 million for the subsequent draw.
UK Specificities
The UK Millionaire Maker
Every EuroMillions ticket purchased in the UK automatically includes a unique Millionaire Maker code. In each draw, one Millionaire Maker code is drawn at random, and the holder of the matching ticket wins £1,000,000 — completely separate from the main jackpot. This means every single UK player has an additional chance to become a millionaire, even if their main numbers do not match.
On special occasions, such as European Millionaire Maker events and certain seasonal draws, multiple codes may be drawn, creating tens or even hundreds of new millionaires in a single night.
Tax-Free Prizes
All EuroMillions prizes won in the UK are paid as a tax-free lump sum. There is no income tax or capital gains tax applied to lottery winnings in the United Kingdom, so the amount you win is the amount you receive.
Minimum Age
Players must be at least 16 years old to purchase a EuroMillions ticket in the UK — one of the lowest minimum ages among all participating countries.
EuroMillions HotPicks
UK players also have access to EuroMillions HotPicks, a supplementary game that lets you choose how many numbers you want to match (from 1 to 5 main numbers) for fixed prizes ranging from £10 up to £1,000,000. HotPicks tickets cost £1.50 and are drawn alongside every EuroMillions draw.
EuroMillions Prize Tiers and Odds
There are 13 prize tiers in EuroMillions, from matching just two main numbers all the way up to the jackpot. Prize amounts (except for the jackpot, which starts at a fixed €17 million) are calculated using a pari-mutuel system: a set percentage of the total prize fund is allocated to each tier and divided among all winners in that category. This means exact prize values can vary from draw to draw.
Your overall odds of winning any prize are 1 in 13.
| Tier | Numbers Matched | Odds of Winning |

Draw Schedule
EuroMillions draws take place twice a week:
- Tuesday — draw at approximately 8:00 pm UK time

The ticket sales deadline is 7:30 pm on each draw night. Results are published shortly after the draw, typically by 9:30 pm, and are available via the National Lottery website, the official app, and authorised retailers.
